Ben & Yasmin
My Story
On Monday 29th January 2024 our family received the most devastating phone call that Ben had collapsed and stopped breathing while playing football and had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.
Thankfully Ben's team mates, the opposition players and the referees knew that he was in a time critical and life threatening situation and were able to save his life through CPR and defibrillation. Without this, it's unlikely Ben would still be with us.
After 4 weeks in hospital, Ben has now had a lifechanging operation to fit a subcutaneous ICD (Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator) that will give him the critical shock he needs to prevent cardiac arrest in the event of another arrhythmia. The cause of Ben's cardiac arrest remains unknown.
SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) can happen to anybody, anywhere at any time and where an arrhythmia has occurred, only the shock from a defibrillator can bring the heart back into rhythm. For every minute that a person is in cardiac arrest without CPR and defibrillation, their chance of survival decreases by another 10% and without defibrillation 95% of SCAs are sadly fatal.
We feel so lucky that Ben was playing at Eastbourne Sports Complex when he went into cardiac arrest as they have a defibrillator on site, however there is currently no legal requirement for organisations including workplaces, schools and sports venues to have a defibrillator available and as a result, unfortunately not everybody survives.
With the support of family and friends and alongside Armitage and Wilson Furniture, we're now raising money for 'Missed A Beat' - a charity whose purpose is to raise awareness about the importance of defibrillators and to fund the cost of buying and installing more defibrillators for the local area to help save more lives. As Ben is a qualified electrician, he has also pledged to help MAB by installing defibrillators for the charity once he has fully recovered from his operation.
Please help us by supporting such an important cause that is close to our hearts. Every donation to the charity will help to save another life 💙❤️
